How to Provide Constructive Feedback
Regular, clear, and respectful feedback improves performance, builds confidence, and reduces rework throughout the internship.
Step 1: Make Feedback Regular and Timely
Create a consistent feedback rhythm.
- Use weekly check-ins and the Weekly Feedback Loop (WFL)
- Share feedback while tasks are still fresh
- Address adjustments early to maintain alignment
Tip: Aim to give feedback within a few days of a deliverable or behavior.
Step 2: Balance Positive and Developmental Feedback
Reinforce progress while guiding improvement.
- Highlight what’s working well to build confidence
- Frame development areas as opportunities, not criticism
Step 3: Be Specific and Action-Oriented
Avoid vague feedback.
- Reference specific behaviors or outputs
- Provide clear, actionable next steps
Step 4: Deliver Feedback Thoughtfully
Be mindful of different communication styles.
- Keep feedback private and supportive
- Balance directness with empathy
- Focus on clarity rather than tone assumptions
This helps interns adjust without feeling discouraged.
Step 5: Encourage Two-Way Feedback
Make feedback a dialogue.
- Invite interns to share challenges or preferences
- Ask what support would help them perform better
Step 6: Use the SBI Method
Structure feedback using Situation–Behavior–Impact.
- Situation: When it occurred
- Behavior: What was observed
- Impact: Why it matters
This keeps feedback objective and focused on improvement.
