Prioritizing Intern Well-being
Supporting intern well-being reduces burnout, builds trust, and enables consistent performance throughout the internship.
Normalize Well-being Check-ins
Make space for conversations beyond task updates.
- Ask how interns are doing during 1:1s
- Encourage sharing challenges early
Set Realistic Expectations
Prevent overwhelm through clear structure.
- Break larger goals into manageable milestones
- Avoid unclear or overly heavy workloads
Refer to the Effective Task Structuring guide for support.
Promote Healthy Work Habits
Encourage balance and respect boundaries.
- Reinforce working hours and response-time expectations
- Discourage after-hours replies
Create a Supportive Environment
Ensure interns feel safe asking for help.
- Welcome questions and early communication
- Respond with empathy and clarity
A supportive environment reduces stress and misalignment.
Respect Sick Leave and Time Off
Occasional time off is normal.
When leave is needed:
- Confirm dates
- Align on how work will be covered or resumed
- Notify the PSA so pause days can be recorded
This prevents unnecessary pressure and system reminders during leave.
Use Check-ins and Weekly Feedback Loops
Spot concerns early through regular touchpoints.
- Pair short check-ins with Weekly Feedback Loops (WFLs)
- Flag signs of stress, confusion, or workload imbalance
Early visibility allows timely support.
Model Healthy Balance
Supervisors set the tone.
- Avoid late-hour meetings where possible
- Respect boundaries
- Demonstrate sustainable work habits
Interns often mirror what they observe.
👉Important Note
If you notice repeated sick days, mental health concerns, or signs of burnout, inform the PSA. We will reach out to the intern and provide additional support. You are not expected to manage these situations alone.
