Understanding VI Internship & OPT/CPT Eligibility

Are you eligible for OPT/CPT?

If you’re hoping to use your Virtual Internship for Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT), it’s important to know that eligibility is not guaranteed.

While we can provide general information about your internship, only your university can confirm whether it meets OPT/CPT requirements.

Talk to your designated school official (DSO)

If you have questions about using this internship for OPT/CPT, your Designated School Official (DSO) or International Education Office is the best resource.

Since Virtual Internships cannot provide immigration advice, always check with your DSO to ensure your internship aligns with your visa requirements.

Inform your host company or supervisor

If OPT/CPT eligibility is important to you, consider discussing it with your host company or supervisor early on.

You can share your university’s requirements, but keep in mind that our host companies cannot guarantee eligibility.

Need to adjust your internship dates?

If your internship dates need to align with your OPT/CPT timeline, contact your Internship Success Advisor as soon as possible to check if adjustments can be made.

To request changes, email internsupport@virtualinternships.com.

Important reminders

  • Virtual Internships is not your employer or sponsor. While we’re here to support you, interns are responsible for handling their own OPT/CPT eligibility.
  • Visa-related concerns? Always contact your DSO. Any decisions regarding your U.S. student visa must go through your Designated School Official or International Education Office.
